Living the Spirit filled life

09/06/2015

The most important command in Scripture is ‘Be filled with the Holy Spirit’. How so you ask? Isn’t the command to love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind soul and strength more important, or say ‘to love you neighbour as yourself’. I’d agree except that to do all those you need to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Christian life is about the promise spoken of in Acts 2 which is for you and your children… all who have been called by the Lord in fact, that promise is the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Paul’s command to be filled with the Spirit is made to the Ephesian church one of the most spiritually mature churches in the New Testament. If they needed to be reminded to be filled daily with the Holy Spirit then we need it too.

We need the power of the Holy Spirit for two very practical reasons; No1 to overcome sin in our lives. As obvious as it may sound we are sinners by nature and sinners by choice, only the presence of the Holy Spirit will enable us to live a life overcoming sin and temptation. Christ died so that we might know God’s presence in our lives day by day… what a privilege! No.2 we need power to serve God – both in the church and in the world to be his witnesses. Ministry to the church without the Spirit’s anointing and presence is powerless and ineffective, it is also unfruitful. Witness to the world is weak and worthless without the presence of the Holy Spirit. After all, the one who ‘witnessed’ the events of the life of Jesus and the resurrection was the Holy Spirit and not us, so he witnesses through us to the world. It is effective because we speak truth with power and grace under His influence.

How do you get the anointing? How can I be filled with the Holy Spirit? Here’s five steps to follow:-

No1 – Confess your sins to God – 1 John 1:9 says ‘But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.’

No.2 – Give up your sins – Psalm 66:18 says ‘If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.’ Don’t savour sin like a sweet in the mouth where you turn it over and over to enjoy – reject it as you would poison.

No.3 – Surrender to God – Romans 6:13 says ‘Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.’

No.4 – Obey God’s voice – Peter said in Acts 5:32 ‘God gives the Holy Spirit to those who obey Him.’

No.5 – Believe that God wants you to receive the Holy Spirit – faith is the key that unlocks the door to God’s provision and favour in our lives. In Luke 11 Jesus tells us in six ways to ask, seek, knock to receive the Holy Spirit. That is a promise made to believers!
