God can see in the dark

What a pleasant teaching the \'Sovereignty of God\' is to God\'s people. We often think of God as closely involved in our lives when it comes to the good things, but then we sense God\'s absence when things aren\'t going quite so well, or even when sin seems to have the upper hand. But if we look at what the Bible itself teaches, then we would have to conclude that God is present even in the seemingly darkest moments of our lives. Take that Scripture in Isaiah 45:7 \'I create the light and make the darkness. I send good times and bad times. I, the LORD, am the one who does these things.\' Because we are such a positive people we naturally read the first part and skip over in our minds the second, so we rejoice that God is the one who sends the \'good times\' and \'creates the light\', but this verse also tells us that God \'makes the darkness\' and \'sends the bad times\'. The reason I guess we skip over these parts is because we have been taught that God is good and He only does good things for his people, but our problem is our definition of good. We tend to interpret the word \'good\' from our perspective, whereas the \'goodness of God\' must by definition be from his perspective.

God uses bad times in our lives to teach us that we must not fall into the trap of seeing everything in life from just our perspective. It encourages us to see a bigger picture, a world where we are not the centre, but the circumference.

I was talking to my children about this recently, and we contemplated the truth that God created the darkness. In a strange way it encouraged us, because it reminded us that God is present even in the difficult and challenging times. Dare I say it, He is even present when we sin, he is not the author of our sin, but He is certainly Lord over our lives even when we sin.

What are you going through in your life at the moment? Are you discouraged by some trial that is sorely testing you and worst of all you feel distant from your heavenly Father? Can I encourage you with these strange words from the Lord through Isaiah the prophet, \'I send the bad times and make the darkness\'. The psalmist wrote these words, \'... If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.\' (Ps 139:8) Learn to see God even in the dark times of your life, for if we believe that God is everywhere present, then surely He is with you as much in the darkness as in the light.
