Keep on Praying

As a church we have been praying and fasting on Tuesday\'s for a couple of months. And during that time we have been reading through Colin Whittaker\'s book on Revival. I say we; because each Tuesday evening we\'ve been meeting together to pray for Revival in the Swindon churches and at the beginning of the prayer time one of us will read a chapter pertaining to a particular revival. Part of the logic of this is simple, revivals often begin when people start to read about what God has done in the past, it inspires them to believe and long for God to do the same with them.

Critics of revival often argue that when we focus on it we fail to get on with the day to day tasks of evangelising the lost. I am confident that this is not the case with us, however, I recognise that to nurture a deep longing for God to come and breathe upon what we are doing and indeed to supercede what we are doing is entirely right and scriptural. God can in a moment of time do more than we can through a lifetime and it is entirely right for us to pray earnestly to God for him to move among us. History supports this approach.

To this end I have been struck by the words in the NLT Bible of Luke 11:8, here Jesus teaches about prayer and he illustrates the importance of continuous and shameless persistence with the example of a man who receives unexpected visitors late at night. Given that there were no supermarkets in those days he is forced to approach a neighbour at an unearthly hour for bread. Now the neighbour is outraged to be summoned when he and his family are tucked up in bed, and he responds only because his neighbour is shamelessly persistent, and not because he is his friend. Given that it is the Lord Jesus who uses this story to teach us about prayer it seems entirely appropriate for us to keep praying for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our churches for it is very much in the context of giving the Holy Spirit as verse 13 confirms that we are to pray.

So I am determined to keep asking the Lord to pour out His Spirit upon the churches in Swindon, that we might experience the breath of God upon us. I believe that God will answer our prayers if we will be shamelessly persistent in pleading for him to do so. I believe the Lord loves to see us prioritizing on coming to him for the answers to our lack of impact and transformation. Only the Spirit of God can take that which is weak and make it strong, only He can quicken our souls and make them alive. Every minute spent pleading with God for Him to move is a wise investment of our time.

So let us ask, seek, knock and the door to revival will surely be answered, found and opened!
