Living in the Light of Eternity

Are you really ready to face God?

Dear sir, can I ask you, are you living your life aware and conscious that another world exists beyond the one that you can see? Are you living your life knowing that the moment you leave this world another will open up to you and you will see as you’ve never seen before that all that you have done in this life will have enormous repercussions in the next?

People rightly worry about death because they know instinctively that after death they must face judgement for their actions on earth. The Bible teaches us that a day is coming when all the dead, both great and small, will be standing before God’s throne. And the books will be opened, including the Book of Life. And the dead will be judged according to what they had done, as recorded in the books. The examination will not relate to how kind they have been to others, or how hard they worked, or how much they have given to good causes, no, it will be to examine whether they have committed any sins in their life. These sins will not be silly things like whether a person has been careful in their eating habits etc, but related to the 10 commandments. Have you loved God with all your heart, mind, soul and strength? Have you chosen to worship and devote yourself to God exclusively or have you loved and cherished other idols in your heart? Have you honoured God by giving Him first place in your time and attention; have you honoured your parents; taking particular care of them in their old age as well as respecting them in your youth. Have you ever hated another person, spoken bad things about them; have you lusted in your heart after others, committing adultery or fornication in your mind? Have you lied about others, spoken in a way that exaggerates another person’s fault’s whilst diminishing your own? have you stolen your employer’s time or resources, taken anything that was not rightfully yours in the first place; have you envied others their possessions, their families, their success? All of these issues will be exposed on the day of judgement and each person will receive their just reward or punishment according to what they done or not done as the case may be.

But how will God decide whether you are guilty or not? How high is the bar that needs to be passed to enter the everlasting kingdom? Well in truth, only the perfect and sinless will be allowed into Heaven if God is going to act with justice to all. If God is holy in all his ways, if He is to act in accordance with what we see portrayed in the Bible then no one will be able to enter into his presence. Every person has sinned and sinned with pleasure and determination, so not only will your specific sins be exposed, but also your hearts delight in sin itself.

If God gives you what you deserve then you are bound for eternity in hell. As someone once said, if God were to cast us into outer darkness we could only claim that He was a just God. But thank God, it doesn’t have to be this way. Jesus gives us a clue in Luke 13:2 - 3 where we read, ‘“Do you think those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other people from Galilee?” Jesus asked. “Is that why they suffered? 3 Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God.” According to the Lord Jesus, if you want to avoid perishing along with others, which is another way of saying ‘dying with judgement facing you’ then the answer is to ‘repent of your sins’ – turn away from them and renounce them.

The Bible teaches us that the Lord Jesus Christ came to our world to die in your place, to take the punishment your sins deserved. If you turn to Him and ask Him to forgive you, he will do so because He has already paid for your sins when he died on the cross 2,000 years ago. The book of Romans tells us that you can be made right with God only by faith in Jesus, in other words, by putting your trust in Him to forgive you and give you new life.

Perhaps you would like to turn to God right now, after all the most dangerous person to be right now is you, since you know the truth and are faced with a choice, do you put your life right with God, or do you risk living with this knowledge but continuing to walk in darkness. The worse place in hell must be to have known the way of righteousness and yet not to have turned to it when opportunity was given. I urge you to get on your knees, turn to God and ask Him to forgive you and put Jesus Christ at the centre of your life. Then find a good Bible believing church and commit yourself to it so that you can begin the journey of preparing for the rest of eternity with God.
